The correct diet is essential to the well-being, breeding success and longevity of any organism. If an animal consumes the correct diet, it will remain healthy and productive throughout its natural life span.

Over the last two decades, animal nutrition has become a science rather than an ‘art’. This is good news, as it means that all pets can now have access to professionally formulated complete diets and supplements, which lowers the risk of metabolic imbalances due to the consumption of diets lacking in essential nutrients and energy.

Nutrition
The correct diet is essential to the well-being, breeding success and longevity of any organism. If an animal consumes the correct diet, it will remain healthy and productive throughout its natural life span. Over the last two decades, animal nutrition has become a science rather than an ‘art’. This is good news, as it means that all pets can now have access to professionally formulated complete diets and supplements, which lowers the risk of metabolic imbalances due to the consumption of diets lacking in essential nutrients and energy.

What makes up a balanced diet?

Protein
Total protein in an animals diet is probably one of the most misunderstood concepts in feeding. It is in fact not the total protein value itself that is important, but the ratio of the amino acids that make up the protein that is vital. Two different diets may have exactly the same percentage value of total protein, but may differ vastly in the levels of different amino acids available. If for example one diet has a low level of lysine (an amino acid essential to avians), the bird will have to consume much more of that specific diet to meet its daily requirements for that amino acid. So it is vitally important that these amino acids are available to the birds in the correct ratios to ensure balanced protein nutrition. This will also ensure that the food you are feeding is as economical as possible – an animal will not have to consume large volumes to supply its minimum requirements.

Fats
Fats and vegetable oils are concentrated energy, and energy is vital to sustain life. Normal body functions, like temperature maintenance, breeding and growth all require the utilization of available energy. Fats, especially vegetable oils also contain unsaturated fats and include some essential fatty acids like linoleic acid, which some animals cannot manufacture on their own. However care should be taken to ensure against obesity. Many commercially available diets have an over abundance of seeds like sunflower, and obesity may lead to many health problems for your birds. There is also a vastly differing fat requirement for each individual species of bird. Some birds like Macaws have a high fat requirement, while others like Amazons need lower fat levels in their diets.

Vitamins, Minerals & Trace Elements
Most people are aware of the need for vitamins and minerals in any organisms’ diet. What is not common knowledge, is the that these vitamins, minerals and trace elements interact with each other and need to be available to the birds in very specific ratios for adequate absorption and utilization. Given incorrectly i.e. To much of one and not enough of another, can actually cause severe dietary imbalances.

Carbohydrates
Most avian diets do not have a shortage of available carbohydrates. Birds can easily utilize the carbohydrates available in seeds and grains. The quality and digestibility of these carbohydrates however, become important in specialty diets like Handrear and some nectar and softbill diets. With Avi diets, you can be assured of top quality and maximum digestibility.

Highly digestible, this diet has been carefully researched and tested to provide the very best for your baby birds in the appropriate balanced ratios.  The growth rate of your chicks has now slowed down, so the protein requirement in their diet has dropped.  Ravi Parakeet Handrearing compensates for this drop in growth rate, while still providing adequate fat and energy required for the final stages of development into adults by the addition of palm oil.   Added amino acids and fatty acids provide the building blocks for beautiful lustrous plumage formation and vitamins C and E promote the healthy immune systems needed as the chicks are now being exposed to increased environmental challenges as they leave the nursery.
